ASLEF welcomes TFL's decision to start the process of finding a modern safety system for London Tramlink. While it will be scant consolation to the families and friends of those killed and injured in the terrible accident at Sandilands, this seems to be a belated recognition that the root cause of that tragedy was inadequate safety systems, and an attempt to rectify this for the future. The final report from the Rail Accident Investigation branch is yet to be published but it is clear that all those responsible for the oversight and safe operation of the system, including TFL, FirstGroup and the ORR will have serious questions to answer.
