ASLEF are demanding an urgent review of security at depots where Underground trains are stabled overnight after an assault on a Night Tube driver on the Jubilee line in the early hours of Sunday morning.

While taking a train into sidings at Stanmore, the driver responded to an automatic alarm when the trains rear cab door was opened. He was confronted by a group of men who took his radio and sprayed him with paint. When he tried to escape he was tripped and kicked. The attack has been reported to the British Transport Police (BTP).

This incident highlights concerns about the security of depots where trains are left overnight. There have also been recent incidents on the Victoria line. If graffiti vandals can access these locations, there is a real risk that those planning serious violent attacks may also do so with dreadful consequences.

This is just one in a series of incidents where Night Tube drivers have been attacked. When the service was introduced, we were promised that additional staff and police resources would be in place to make sure it would be safe to operate. Instead staff have been left alone and vulnerable in dangerous situations. This can not be allowed to continue.

Our Health and Safety reps are insisting security arrangements at all depots be reviewed as a matter of urgency. But we also want immediate action at locations like Stanmore where drivers are particularly vulnerable. London Underground management need to act now by ensuring additional staff and security is in place.

ASLEF will be issuing safety advice to our members this week. Drivers and other staff can not be expected to go into situations where they are vulnerable to serious assaults.
